Incomplete Grades

An incomplete grade is a temporary grade an instructor may assign if you cannot finish a course during the regular semester due to serious, documented reasons.  

To Request an “I” Grade, You Must 

• Talk with your professor. The decision to grant an “I” grade is made by the professor. You must agree on the remaining coursework and deadline.
• Be passing the course at the time you make the request.
• Be near completion of the course.
• Have a documented reason for why you cannot complete the course on time (e.g., illness, accident, or unexpected crisis).

“I” grades are not given for extra time to improve your grade or catch up on missed assignments.

To Resolve an “I” Grade:  

• Complete the remaining coursework by an agreed-upon deadline with the professor. 
• Do not re-register for the course.
• If the coursework isn’t completed by the deadline, the “I” will convert to an “F”.

When an “I” Grade Might Be Appropriate

• You miss the final exam due to a serious illness or extraordinary circumstances (e.g., car accident).
• You experience the death of a friend or non-immediate family member near the end of the course.
