Student Research Week Kicks Off April 1

A record-breaking 800 plus students will be sharing their work during Student Research Week this year.

For more than a decade, UCF has celebrated the endeavors of undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines during the first week in April. The goal is to show how students’ research and creative scholarship enrich the learning experience, the community and make a difference in the world.

Festivities begin with a kick-off event at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 1, in the Cape Florida Ballroom. Speakers include Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Dooley, Vice President for Research and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies Elizabeth Klonoff and keynote speaker Pegasus Professor Stella Sung among others.

Sung is the director of the UCF Center for Research and Education in Arts, Technology, and Entertainment. Sung’s presentation will focus on integrating technology and subject matter research into the symphony concert experience. Attendees are encouraged to download a specially designed app called OCEANA MUSIC, which is free from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Bring it on your mobile device to enjoy a unique presentation experience.

Select awards will also be handed out to students for their excellence in teaching and research at the kick-off event.

Workshops on a variety of topics from how to publish research to coping with research feedback will also be offered throughout the week. All workshops and activities are open to the UCF community and the public at no cost.

The week culminates with the Student Scholar Symposium which highlights student projects. On April 4, the Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence (SURE) gives undergraduate students the opportunity to present their work during various poster sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Awards, some with cash, will be presented. The next day, graduate students have the same opportunity through oral and poster presentations during the Graduate Research Forum which begins at 10:00 a.m. Awards will also be presented at the end of that day.

The College of Graduate Studies, Division of Teaching and Learning, and Undergraduate Research organize the week. Additional financial support comes from Academic Affairs, the Student Government Association, several colleges, private donors, the Graduate Student Association, and the Office of Research.
